Pietraia (Pronuncia francese: [pjetʁɛ̃]) is a Belgian breed of domestic pig. It is indigenous to Wallonia, and takes its declare from the village of Piétrain in the municipality of Jodoigne in Walloon Brabant, in northern Wallonia. It first appeared in practically 1920, and expected recognition as a breed in 1950. Its origins are not clear; it has been suggested that the farmers of Piétrain may have recognised, and selectively bred for, a genetic mutation causing muscular hypertrophy.
From approximately 1960, the Piétrain was in addition to reared in Germany, principally in Baden-Württemberg, Nordrhein-Westfalen and Schleswig-Holstein; it is used as a sire for cross-breeding.
In the 1980s and 1990s, researchers at the skill of veterinary medicine of the Université de Liège used cross-breeding in the impression of stress-resistant Large White buildup to build a Piétrain strain without the gene for porcine put the accent on syndrome (also called malignant hypothermia), to which the indigenous stock was particularly susceptible.
